Beat Procrastination with 5 Magic Words
Did you know there are five magic words that can stop procrastination in its tracks?
They’re simple, but highly effective.
Before I tell you what they are, let me tell you a little story.
Not a morning person
I am soooo not a morning person, unless by “morning” you mean “lunchtime”. Despite that, I get up by 5:30am (or earlier) on weekdays, and by 7am at least one of the weekend days.
If you ARE a morning person, you’re probably rolling your eyes right now and thinking “Big deal” — but it IS a big deal for me. Me getting up before dawn most days is the morning person’s equivalent of working til 2am every night with no caffeine.
The point is, I start out each day the absolute opposite of bright-eyed and bushy tailed. Pretty much the last thing I want to do is get out of bed, let along get out of bed and get a bunch of work done. So I use the 5 magic words.
Overcoming procrastination
When the alarm goes off, my first thought is normally, “Ugh, I don’t want to get up! It’s too early!”
But I answer myself with the five magic words. Ready for them?
“So what. Do it anyway.”
And I get up. Sounds simple, right? That’s because it is.
Say those magic words
We all encounter obstacles on the way to reaching our goals. We all have days (sometimes every day) where we don’t feel like doing things. We’d all rather be watching a movie, sleeping in, or doing whatever.
But if you really want to get to where you want to be, say those magic words when you hear yourself procrastinating, whining, or listing “reasons” why its hard for you to do something. Say ’em out loud if you have to.
Then listen to yourself, and do it anyway. Right now.
You’ll be glad you did.
I could really use this advice when I’m blogging. Writing isn’t my favorite thing to do, but I do it because it pays the bills. I need to be more consistent though, so I’ll give it a try.
Thanks for the advise! I’ll have to try that next time I need help getting motivated. Especially when it’s time to fold clothes.
Action is a great motivator. Once you get started on an activity you’ll normally have the energy to finish it. Thanks for the magic words.
i’d definitely try these magic words. I am also not a morning person and I have been quite procrastinating these past few days.
